The trumpet and tap dance scene immediately got my attention. That is probably one of the best moments in the film, along with the diner scene and the final musical sequence. You can really feel the love for music in those parts. I can already see the early DNA of Damien Chazelle here. The crazy panning shots and the way the music drives the storytelling are clearly ideas he would later refine in La La Land. It is interesting seeing those elements in a more raw form. At the same time, the handheld 16mm style can be a bit dizzying for me.
