I notice how he plays with motivation, obsession, and the personal cost of chasing a dream. His use of color is top notch, and paired with Linus Sandgren’s visual instincts, the collaboration really works. The lighting and palette constantly shift depending on emotion. The choreography is nice too! I am just not used to seeing Emma Stone portray such a soft and girly character after watching her strong woman roles in her collaborations with Yorgos Lanthimos. Here she feels more vulnerable and grounded, which changes the dynamic of her screen presence. I also like Ryan Gosling’s explanation about his passion for jazz because it does not feel like exposition but a genuine belief system that defines his identity. For me this is a visual popcorn film. The wardrobe, production design, and grading all come together naturally. Nothing feels out of place, everything feels emotionally appropriate to the moment and it is so aesthetically pleasing. At its core the film is about two adults growing apart due to priorities, how dreams evolve, how love can remain even after separation, and the choice between passion and relationship. The last sequence feels like a dreamland fantasy of a perfect life, a montage of what could have been, filled with longing and regret. That ending is the nail in the coffin. Ang sakit.
