Ryan Gosling channeling Tom Cruise real hard. Another movie where the trailer is boring, but the film is actually really good. I especially love the seemingly one continuous shot, the real explosions, and seeing actual sets being destroyed. The whole filmmaking chaos behind the scenes kind of reminded me of the second act of Babylon (2022), where simply trying to capture a scene becomes an insane production in itself. Nice action, nice songs, and plenty of fun pop culture references. The first highlight for me is easily the club sequence when he gets high. The movie suddenly turns into this colorful, exaggerated visual trip that feels straight out of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010). It is basically a fun action rom com that somehow sneaks in a crime conspiracy subplot along the way, and surprisingly, all those different elements work together. Then the final set piece goes full Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) with the vehicles, practical stunt work, explosions, and larger than life heroics. It feels like the movie is finally giving stunt performers their own superhero moment. It's like a love letter for their hardwork. Good for them yeah! And TBH, after watching all those fake movie scenes throughout the film, I would absolutely watch Metal Storm. That shit looks goddamn fire!
