A quiet, repetitive existence, familiar routines, nothing remarkable on the surface. That sense of numb stability makes the lead instantly relatable before the film escalates the stakes. When things escalate, it doesn’t chase myth making or slick perfection. It keeps the violence playful but grounded, with choreography that feels chaotic yet intentional. There’s a clear personality behind the camera, experimenting with tone and staging rather than going full insanity. The result lands in a sweet spot. Energetic, funny, and brutal. It’s not the most extreme entry in this space, but it balances humor, character, and action in a way that makes it an easy, satisfying ride. ⚠️ Spoilers ahead. Living a boring, routinary life with pretty much the same family dynamics. Nothing spectacular, nothing exciting, just existing. That quiet, numbing normalcy makes the character instantly relatable before anything explodes. Parang John Wick din to. Nanahimik na lang, then someone disturbs the peaceful retirement. Same premise, but a different flavor. Where Wick is sleek and mythic, this one feels more grounded, less legend, more facade crashing down and suppressed rage finally leaking out. The fight choreography is messy but fun. Very Ilya Naishuller DNA. Ngayon lang ako nakarinig ng line na “don’t call 911”. Astig! Parang katumbas ng "Guns, lots of guns". If you just want high energy violence with adequate storytelling, go with Ilya. You’re in good hands. Badass din yung tatay niya. It really runs in the family. What I liked here is how controlled the direction feels. Parang ramdam mo yung restraint ng director. He could’ve gone full crazy and absurd with the fights, but he holds back a bit. It feels like he’s experimenting, cooking, and exploring his cinematography taste. This film has a very different treatment compared to his other work. The third act set piece feels like a Home Alone setup turned into a battlefield. Traps, positioning, escalation, then headshots after headshots. Ang angas ng triple kill ni RZA! That sequence fully embraces the film’s playful brutality. If action and pure fun is the basis, Hardcore Henry is still on top. But for humor and story, Head of State takes the crown. Nobody sits comfortably in between, less extreme, more balanced. Overall, this is just a fun, violent ride with personality and control behind the chaos.
