The Little Things 2021

It feels like one of those movies that becomes even more rewarding on a second watch. If you want a slow burn atmosphere, strong performances, and psychological tension, you're in for a treat. ⚠️ Spoilers ahead. From here on, plot details are discussed. Read on if you’ve seen the film. If not, save this post and come back after. ⚠️ Jared Leto looks really scary here. A person rough around the edges. A psycho who seems to enjoy toying with Deke and Baxter, almost like the investigation itself is just another game for him. What I really like is how the detectives slowly stop working the case and instead get worked by the case. Their obsession, guilt, frustration, and need for answers gradually take control of them until they are no longer thinking clearly. What a nice twist. And I have my own interpretation: Deke worked Baxter up so much that he would eventually end up emotionally compromised and removed from the investigation, preventing Deke’s past mistake and cover up from resurfacing. Whether Deke consciously planned all of that or simply recognized the opportunity along the way, it adds another disturbing layer to his relationship with Baxter. Brilliant. Definitely worth a rewatch to see if I can catch more clues that support this theory of mine.
