Midnight Girls 2026
I watched this because I am Japan sepanx. Satisfied naman because it felt familiar right away. The taxis, the Alphards, the city lights at night, the clean roads, and of course, the vending machines.
Seklusyon (2016) ata yung last kong Tagalog film sa sinehan, so watching a Tagalog film again in theaters felt weirdly refreshing. New experience siya for me, like I was reconnecting with local cinema after being away for too long.
Jodi is still a great actress. I really liked her character as this unselfish giver. Small side note, I like it when she says “telepono” for a cellphone. Very old soul.
I was not annoyed with Patrick. He actually makes sense as a modern child. It really is the responsibility of parents to provide for the child’s needs, and it should never be used as sumbat. His character development was really unexpected. It caught me off guard.
Saki’s emotional arc worked on me the most. Whenever her scenes come up and that nice swelling emotional score starts, I feel like crying. Paris’ hopeless romantic dream of a prince charming is grounded too. It could have been annoying, but the film gives her enough humanity that her development feels earned.
Wanna is the only one who feels predictable and typical, but it is not really her fault because her character is like a sponge. She absorbs everything around her: pain, choices, and survival instincts.
Visually, I really appreciated how the film handled small spaces. he cinematography works because the lights are mounted well, the camera still moves with purpose, and the lens choices make the rooms feel alive instead of flat. Good directing too, especially with the blocking.
Story-wise, the stigma is really strong. Being an entertainer is already hard enough, then you add pangmamaliit, family pressure, and the expectation that your money is not really yours. Grabe yung asa ng pamilya sa kanila. Toxic. I really resonated with that feeling na you cannot even enjoy your hard-earned money because everyone else already has a claim on it. Working for others sucks!
The film also briefly touches on stigma against activists and a gay child. The humanization is greatly written.
When the emotion peaked, I literally had to clap. Newfound respect for Philippine cinema.
