Manchester by the Sea 2016
Non spoiler thoughts (summary):
My main barrier here is the lead performance. I personally struggle to connect with Casey Affleck’s understated style, which makes it hard for me to emotionally enter the film even when the craft is clearly strong. The score and technical elements do a lot of the emotional work, creating weight and atmosphere, but without that performance connection, the experience feels distant. I understand the film’s intent about grief and numbness, yet it never fully bridges into catharsis for me.

My biggest barrier with this film is Casey Affleck. I really get disconnected whenever I watch him. His acting feels dry to me, like he’s just playing himself in every role. I felt the same distance in Interstellar, A Ghost Story, and Oppenheimer. Because of that, I struggle to emotionally enter the film no matter how strong its intentions are.
His delivery and facial expressions come off lifeless to my eyes, like he just wants to say his lines and go home. The most glaring example is the during the fire. His children die, and he stands there frozen and numb among the crowd. I understand the intent is shock and dissociation, but it doesn’t translate emotionally for me. Instead of devastation, I feel detachment. I experience a similar disconnect with Paul Mescal in Gladiator II and Aftersun.
Technically, the film is doing a lot of heavy lifting. The musical score is especially effective. It carries emotional weight during key moments like the fire sequence, the police station confession, and the failed suicide attempt. The music fills the emotional space that I’m not getting from the performance, amplifying the tragedy and guilt that define Lee’s character. Without the score, those scenes would hit much flatter for me.
Because I never emotionally connect with Lee, the film ends without a cathartic release for me. I understand what it’s trying to say about grief being unresolved and lifelong, but the emotional bridge never fully forms. A missed opportunity for someone like me who experienced it too. I finish the film aware of its direction, yet emotionally untouched.
