Maganda ang sets and may konting film grains that give it a soft and almost nostalgic texture. Nakakatawa si Da Vine Joy Randolph, and her humor balances the heavier parts of the story. Elizabeth is so so so so great. Her performance feels unique and deeply emotional. In contrast, Larry played by Miles Teller and Luke played by Callum Turner give this Peter Quill and Thor competitive vibe, playful and ego driven but still likable. The emotional core of the film is in her choosing a memory of what could have been, which now traps her in constantly returning to the memory of what has been. It shows how regret can anchor someone to an alternate life path in their mind. The most memorable line for me is “Love is more than a happy thought.” It is about rising above the burdens, struggles, and sacrifices. Having been married for four years, this hit me hard. Love is being there even when you do not feel like it, supporting and building each other even through annoyance and ordinary days. I am normally not a fan of romance movies, but when the premise is thoughtful, I watch them. This gave me the same emotional feel as Time Traveller’s Wife and About Time. Ang ganda ng kirot sa puso. It feels genuine and real, not shallow or manufactured. I was surprised that the film did not explore the idea of waiting for their children to eventually join them for eternity. Personally, I would choose and wait for my kids. I do not know if they avoided this to keep the film focused on the love dilemma, or because family culture in the West is different and not as tight as ours, or maybe naive pa ako and my perception of love for children will evolve as I grow older. Perhaps the film is more about choosing a new existence beyond earthly roles, implying that they already fulfilled their part in life, and now they get to choose a version of existence that they always wanted. The film has a lot of heart. First time ko ulit suminghot singhot ng baradong ilong sa sinehan. It feels like a quiet but sincere exploration of the question, what is love.
