Cowboys & Aliens 2011

Non spoiler thoughts (summary): I like this most when it leans fully into its weird cowboy and sci-fi blend. Once the film gets out into the desert, the wide shots, score, and frontier atmosphere start doing a lot of heavy lifting for me. That dusty western mood mixed with aliens is honestly a fun concept, and I can see why the idea itself is appealing even when the execution is uneven. My biggest issue is that the film takes a while to really lock into its rhythm, especially early on when the action is harder to appreciate visually. But once it settles, I enjoy the landscape photography, the lens choices, and the old school star presence of Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig. For me, it ends up as a messy but entertaining sci-fi western with better craft and creature work than I expected from a 2011 studio blockbuster. ⚠️ Spoilers ahead. If not, save this post and come back after. ⚠️ The first action set piece could have been awesome if the lighting and grading were brighter. I honestly could not see shit. The darkness just swallowed a lot of the movement and chaos, which is frustrating because the sequence itself had the potential to be exciting. Thankfully the second action set piece improves immediately because it happens in broad daylight. Everything becomes clearer and easier to follow. At that point the film really starts to feel like a spaghetti western with sci-fi elements thrown into it. Horses, revolvers, dusty desert, then suddenly aliens appear. That mix is actually pretty cool and fun concept. Whenever the film moves fully into the desert, the cinematography and musical score really stand out. The wide shots make the landscape feel massive and cinematic. It even reminded me of the early aesthetic blueprint of The Mandalorian. That same frontier feeling of small characters traveling through vast desert environments. It gives the movie a grand journey vibe. I also like the lens choices throughout the film. There is a nice shallow depth of field in many shots that isolates the characters while still letting the desert environment breathe behind them. Harrison Ford is still Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig is still Daniel Craig. They are basically doing exactly what you expect from them. Nothing particularly new with their characters, but their presence still anchors the movie. The first act is honestly rough for me and takes time to find its rhythm. But once the second act kicks in, the film becomes more engaging. Then the third act turns into a large scale battle that reminded me of the Wakanda fight in Infinity War. A bright sun soaked battlefield where different groups come together while waves of alien enemies charge in. I am also really glad the final battle happens in daylight. After the dark opening scenes, it was refreshing to finally see the action clearly. The alien CGI is also impressive considering that this film came out in 2011. The texture and detail of the creatures still look believable. Nothing immediately screams computer generated. The way the alien was killed even reminded me of Viserys Targaryen being crowned with gold. That same poetic punishment of greed killing the villain. And the explosion of the alien spaceship at the end was very satisfying.
