Godzilla Minus One 2023

There’s something elegant about watching a film in black and white. It feels timeless. I already watched this in color, but now in B&W, I could say the experience is much better. The monochrome presentation feels more appropriate for the time period and gives the film a texture that reminds me of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (1954). The black and white presentation also works surprisingly well on a technical level. It hides some of the imperfections in the CGI, particularly the background extensions, while also making Godzilla feel even more menacing. Without the distraction of color, his silhouette, scale, and presence become much more imposing. The pacing is slow burn. It is patient in shelling out each character’s motivations.
