Nothing flashy. Nothing gimmicky. Just good old fashioned storytelling by Ridley Scott. The crime drama is handled really well, and the whole drugs and logistics side of the story gives me Martin Scorsese vibes. The investigative nuances of the film feel like David Fincher’s style. Very controlled, methodical, and patient in the way it follows the investigation and slowly pieces everything together. Denzel as Frank Lucas is a quiet, calculating, and calm gangster, unlike other top bosses who are always screaming and power hungry because his presence already tells you he is in control. I think Denzel and Russell did a great job here. Nothing fancy about their performances. No unnecessary theatrics. Just two actors completely locked into their characters, delivering masterful performances.
