tick, tick... BOOM! 2021
Exactly what I imagine living with a writer would be like. Every conversation, frustration, relationship, and random life event could suddenly become material for the next song. Jonathan almost feels like he is constantly processing his own life through writing, turning whatever he is experiencing into music.
I really like how the different genres and styles of the songs reflect where he currently is emotionally. When his life is chaotic, the music becomes frantic and messy. When he is hopeful, it becomes energetic and optimistic. There are romantic moments, anxious moments, melancholic ones, and quieter reflective songs whenever reality starts catching up with him. The musical numbers do not just interrupt the story; they almost become his internal monologue.
And beneath all the music, this is such a relatable movie about the reality of life and the terrifying feeling that time is running out. It understands that pursuing your passion sounds beautiful until rent, relationships, careers, and responsibilities start demanding answers from you. At some point, you have to ask yourself whether you keep chasing the thing you love despite having no guarantee it will ever work out, or choose the practical path and wonder for the rest of your life what could have happened if you kept going.
