The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun 2021
I like this better among all of Wes’ works. The story flows better so I understand it more clearly. It really feels like reading a magazine, with each section acting as its own article. Great cast too in every section. My favorite was the segment with Benicio and Léa.
The black and white works for me. It naturally integrates with the story, and it is beautifully lit, similar to why 12 Angry Men also worked for me. I think Wes’ framing and camera movement fit black and white better than pastel and bright colors.
The color grading here is also softer, so it is easier on my eyes. I also liked how Wes used different aspect ratios in certain scenes.
