Jeff Bridges here really reminds me of Joaquin Phoenix in Inherent Vice. The way he talks, the laid back demeanor, the whole vibe. Same wavelength. But I have to be honest, Jeff is still more charming as a bum. I can definitely see similarities with Inherent Vice, especially with the whole chasing a kidnapped girl plot and the trippy visuals. But this one feels more engaging and crazier. It leans fully into its weirdness and just runs with it. I would not be surprised if PTA took some inspiration from this. The ensemble cast is also great. Everyone brings something unique to the chaos. Julianne Moore’s entrance is also memorable. Another highly sexualized role, but the way she comes in is confident and striking. It immediately grabs attention. That shot from inside the bowling ball is really cool tho. It adds to the film’s playful and trippy visual style.
