The film looks very modern, and you can really feel the heavy use of CGI right away. The color contrast is also quite different from the first movie, leaning more digital than grounded. Even the explosions and fire from the cannon catapults look fake compared to the tangible, dangerous feel of the first Gladiator. In the original, you could almost feel the heat. Here, everything feels lighter and less physical. Pedro Pascal does not command a strong presence on screen. He is fine, but he never fully owns the frame the way you would expect from someone in that position. The baboon sequence completely breaks realism for me. It does not feel believable at all and pulls me out of the film. I do like the arena battle in Rome. That part captures the same energy as the first film. The gore, the survival instinct, the colors, it finally feels like Gladiator again. The relive of the Battle of Salamis looks cool in concept, but it is heavily CGI. Even the sharks do not look realistic. I kept thinking this would have worked better if it was shot in a large tank to give it more weight and realism. Watching it feels more painful than impressive. Paul Mescal’s performance feels dry. I could not really connect with him. His acting and voice come across as monotonous. Joseph Quinn, on the other hand, is much better. Mas magaling pa siya, and he brings more life to the screen. Good thing Acacius dies early because he does not offer much to the plot. What I really hated is Joseph Quinn dying. He is the best thing in this movie, and losing him hurts the film a lot. Overall, Gladiator II feels more artificial than epic. It has moments that remind you of the first film, especially in the arena, but too much CGI, weaker screen presence from the lead, and questionable creative choices stop it from reaching the same level.
