Ghost (1990) review

Non spoiler thoughts (summary): I’m surprised by how well this works as both a supernatural love story and a grounded emotional drama. The premise is already strong on its own, but what really sells it for me is how sincere the film feels. Even with ghosts and afterlife elements, the performances keep everything emotionally believable, and the romance lands without feeling too cheesy. I also really enjoy the mix of tenderness, humor, and old Hollywood style craft. The lighting has that beautiful late eighties studio polish, and Whoopi Goldberg brings comic energy without breaking the emotional tone. For me, the film’s biggest strength is that it takes a cool fantasy setup and turns it into something warm, intimate, and genuinely affecting. ⚠️ Spoilers ahead. The way the song carries the moment makes the longing between Sam and Molly feel so real. And when the song plays again in the third act it hits even harder. I can really feel their desire just to touch each other again, something so simple that suddenly becomes impossible. I was also surprised to see a younger Tony Goldwyn here. His voice and the look in his eyes are instantly recognizable. The moment he appeared I already had a feeling he was not trustworthy. There is something about his presence that immediately signals he is the bad guy. Whoopi Goldberg adds a lot of comedic presence to the film. Her character brings humor into the story without ruining the emotional tone. I like the acting from all the characters. Everyone feels believable. Even with a story that deals with ghosts and the afterlife, the performances keep everything emotionally grounded. The concept itself is fun and cool. A man stuck between life and death trying to protect the woman he loves is already an interesting setup. What surprised me is that the drama actually works. It never feels forced or overly sentimental. The fraud and money laundering angle behind the murder also adds a nice layer of motivation to the story. The lighting has that very distinct late eighties studio style. There is strong classical face lighting where the actors’ features are carefully shaped with key lights and gentle fill. It highlights the cheekbones, eyes, and expressions in a very controlled way that you do not see as often in modern films. And the shadows in the face are really really great! The ending is really well crafted. The emotional payoff lands exactly where it should. It wraps the supernatural premise with a sincere goodbye that feels earned.
