Non spoiler thoughts (summary): A crime rise and fall story told directly from the main character’s perspective. Compared to more operatic mafia films, this one feels street level, more about lifestyle than legacy. Goodfellas is emotionally less heavy than the Martin's most powerful works. The story follows a young man who becomes involved in organized crime, learning the system and climbing through its ranks while enjoying wealth and influence. Over time, pressure, paranoia, and consequences catch up to him, forcing him to face the cost of the life he chose. ⚠️ Spoilers ahead. From here on, plot details are discussed. Read on if you’ve seen the film. If not, save this post and come back after. ⚠️ The film feels similar to The Wolf of Wall Street in the way the narration walks me through Henry’s point of view, his rise in the business, how his colleagues are introduced, and how the conversations stay awkward but tense. At times I also feel like this is a The Godfather type of story but presented with the energy and rhythm closer to The Wolf of Wall Street. I watch how he enters the culture, learns the illegal system, and navigates shady situations until success becomes normal to him. For me, the mafia here feels less formal compared to the Corleones. The Italian family structure in The Godfather feels more dignified and organized, while this one feels like a group of hustlers surviving day to day. There is more swagger in protecting a family legacy than in running scattered operations. My expectations were high because this is Martin Scorsese, yet it did not hit me as strongly as his other films. I can see his style in the direction, but the writing feels looser and less focused. I do not always feel a clear dramatic build, more like a constant rush of moments instead of one strong narrative push. In the end the character arc reminds me of Jordan Belfort. Henry starts powerful and influential but ends up ordinary, living a normal life after tasting excess. The fall from glamour to normalcy becomes the final punishment.
