If not, save this post and come back after. ⚠️ I found the early encounters between Vincent D'Onofrio and the drill instructor hilarious, especially R. Lee Ermey whose delivery reminds me of Sean Penn’s Steven J. Lockjaw energy in One Battle After Another. That humor is sharply contrasted by the grim punishment and revenge from his platoon mates. After that moment his personality shifts completely and I can already see the Kingpin in him. Adam Baldwin’s character comes across as trigger happy and impulsive, yet also courageous and loyal to his teammates. The score during the training sequences sounds properly military and disciplined, but it also darkens whenever the tone requires it, smoothly transitioning from structured cadence to something more ominous as the psychological pressure builds. Since this is set in Vietnam, I get some Apocalypse Now vibes, but the difference is clear. This film focuses on ground level combat and the experience of soldiers in the field, even incorporating a photojournalist perspective like in A24's Civil War, while Apocalypse Now is more of a journey driven mission about locating a missing person. The sets, fire, smoke, and explosions feel massive and believable. The scale of the film is impressive and the production design and cinematography really sell the chaos of war. I think I am starting to appreciate older war films more because they had no choice but to rely on practical and special effects, which makes everything feel heavier and more tangible.
