I went into The Rocky Horror Picture Show completely blind, so I had no idea that this was a musical. I was expecting an actual horror film based on the title and imagery, which probably explains why the whole experience caught me off guard.
Visually, I still see a lot of gothic influence in it. Maybe it is the dramatic costumes, heavy makeup, castle setting, and this very theatrical horror aesthetic surrounding everything. I’m not really a fan of those departments here though.
But I like the music. Fun and very groovy. Even when I wasn’t fully connecting with what was happening, the songs had enough energy and personality to keep things alive. I also liked the sets because they contribute a lot to that strange, theatrical atmosphere.
I was expecting an actual horror film, which is mainly why I picked this, but there really isn’t much of a horror element here. It feels more like a bizarre musical comedy wearing the clothes of a horror movie.
