Michael Mann went full epic mode and it looks incredible.
The opening landscape cinematography is already impressive. Like Shangri-La. The mountains immediately give the film that epic adventure feeling before the story even really gets going.
Love the scale. The cinematography and practical effects are really a thing of beauty and astonishing when captured on camera. There is something about seeing real smoke, fire, explosions, horses, and large groups of people physically occupying the frame that gives the battles so much reality.
My complaint is that some scenes are too dark and it is hard to see what is happening. I like the atmosphere the darkness creates, but there are moments where I genuinely lose track of the drama.
Daniel Day-Lewis disappeared into his role. Here he feels completely at home running through forests, fighting, tracking, and surviving in this world.
The score is also great! It gives the film that huge heroic feeling and really elevates the running, battles, and landscape shots.
Overall, epic and heroic.
Verdict: Excellent
