The Green Mile 1999

Non spoiler thoughts (summary): I experience this film less as a prison drama and more as a meditation on suffering, waiting, and the unbearable weight of knowing death is coming. Even before the film fully lands, I can already feel this getting stronger on a rewatch. ⚠️ Spoilers ahead. From here on, plot details are discussed. Read on if you’ve seen the film. If not, save this post and come back after. ⚠️ The film immediately establishes Percy as someone annoying and immature. Parang adult na hindi nag develop emotionally, tapos may power trip pa because of his connections. Wild Bill on the other hand is just purely lunatic. Both of them are chaotic in different ways. That is why they contrast so well with Paul’s calm demeanor, Brutal’s grounded presence, and John’s quiet and almost spiritual nature. The pacing reminds me a lot of The Shawshank Redemption, but this time with a sci-fi/spiritual element added into it. The director really allows the story and the characters to breathe. Scenes are not rushed. The characters are given time to exist, to interact, and to slowly build emotional weight. I already knew it would be emotional when it was Del’s turn to sit on the chair. That scene alone was hard to watch. Then when it was John’s turn, it hit even harder. It reminded me of Miracle in Cell No. 7, where an innocent person is forced to face punishment for a crime he did not commit. The entire cast delivered powerful performances that made those moments even more painful. I also see the whole film as a metaphor for people on death row. They know they are going to die, but they do not know exactly when. That waiting becomes the most excruciating part. The time in between becomes its own kind of suffering. For now I would give this a 4.5 star. But I feel like on a rewatch, this could easily become a five star film for me.
