Heat 1995

Cute ni Natalie Portman and ang galing agad niya umarte kahit bata pa siya dito. May natural talent talaga. Al Pacino has incredible presence here, very sharp and commanding. Clever detective energy kahit dun palang sa first crime scene, parang alam niya agad what kind of criminals he is dealing with. The diner scene was a sight to see, ang weird ng mukha ni De Niro na fresh pa dito and malakas pa ang dating. His character still has full energy, not a tired old man role. Nagulat ako na may kasali dn pala si William Fichtner dito. I like him since Prison Break. Ganda ng sound mixing, umiikot talaga sa tenga, parang spatial. Score or musical motif is great. The soundtrack makes the whole film feel alive even with its almost three hour runtime. Kahit mabagal at quiet minsan ang narrative, the music keeps it moving and immersive. This is a 1995 film but the lens choices, framing, aesthetic, lighting, color, and audio all feel modern. Indeed ahead of its time. Yung line na, “What am I doing. I am talking to an empty telephone because there is a dead man on the other end of this fucking line.” Ang angas, memorable! And in the background yung cooks nagluluto. Let him cook literally. Anong laban ng businessman sa thugs? There is also a line that stuck with me: “You do not live with me. You live among the remains of dead people.” My only complaint is that it follows the 90s trend of having a romance subplot. I get why it is there since it sets up the contradiction of him saying he avoids commitments so he can walk away from any heat. It gives character motivation and humanizes them. The meet up of Al Pacino and De Niro shows that they are both cut from the same cloth. They live for the game. What they are doing is their life and they cannot exist without it. And they respect each other for that, deeper than enemies. The set up exchange drop has a really good gunfight scene. They really work as a team, coordinated and decisive. The bank heist was surgical, no wasted movement. The gunfight was incredible and Val Kilmer stole the spotlight. But really, paano nila na overpowered yung squad of policemen and still got away? This is not a fast paced heist film. It takes its time to flesh out the characters and build who they are. The hotel scene with Natalie caught me off guard, unexpected talaga! When De Niro left his lover, it is a direct callback to their conversation. If he feels Al Pacino around the corner, will he leave her or not. And he did. Yung ending scene sa airfield ang galing ng paggamit ng sound ng airplane, ng pag on and off ng ilaw para sa shadow at tension. The silence adds weight to the moment and to the inevitable ending.
