The film finally becomes alive because many scenes are shot on real locations instead of obvious studio interiors. The lenses also feel more deliberate, producing soft circular bokeh instead of that flatter look from earlier films. Bruce Lee also looks different here. He is still ripped but leaner, less bulky, almost more athletic than muscular, and his face looks slimmer which adds to the sharper screen presence. The movie plays like a mix of spy film and Mortal Kombat style tournament structure. There is investigation, infiltration, secret island villain base, then rounds of martial arts fights layered into it. I honestly could not care much about most characters here. I sympathized more with Bruce Lee’s motivations in Fist of Fury, while this one feels more mission driven than emotionally driven. The fights themselves are clearly improved.
