War Machine 2026
Non spoiler thoughts (summary):
I appreciate the clean cinematography, real locations, and practical explosions because they give the action a grounded physical feel. The mix of prosthetics, CGI, and sound design helps the combat damage land, and the machine itself has enough menace and personality to feel like more than just a generic robot threat.
What works most for me is how clearly the danger is established early on. Even when some wider shots look artificial and some action scenes feel a bit too game-like, the film still has enough energy and craft to stay watchable. I just wish the story beneath all that action had taken a more surprising direction.

Clean and decent cinematography in many moments. I appreciate the use of real locations because it helps ground the story. There are some wide shots though that feel like CGI, which slightly breaks the immersion. The explosions are nice because they clearly used real explosives and pyrotechnics. The impact of the gore and accidents is felt. I also like the mix of prosthetics, CGI, and sound effects that bring the combat damage to life.
The machine itself has personality. It feels villainous and menacing, not just a lifeless machine. There is something intimidating about how it moves and reacts to the soldiers, like it is studying them while hunting them.
The stakes are clearly established in the first act. I immediately understood the danger and what the characters were up against. But after the falls sequence the tension starts to weaken. The urgency that was strong in the beginning slowly fades.
There is also an attempt to mimic the continuous shot style that Extraction did during the driving and action sequences. That technique worked really well in Extraction because the camera movement felt fluid and invisible. Here it sometimes looks more like a video game perspective rather than a seamless cinematic moment.
The final battle is a nice CGI showcase. It honestly gave me some Transformers vibes with realistic textures. But the whole story feels like it was conceived by a kid playing in a sandbox with toy soldiers, Matchbox cars, and a giant robot. Despite that, the ranger patch moment still feels earned.
I was secretly hoping for a more surprising twist. Imagine if the machine was actually created by the US military and the ranger mission was just a cover to test its combat capability. That would have made the story more disturbing and thought provoking. It could have turned into a palaisipan about how governments can manipulate and sacrifice their own soldiers. It would also raise the idea that the days of human soldiers are numbered because machines will eventually replace them.
But that twist never happens. Instead it just becomes another military versus alien invasion story similar to Transformers, Battle Los Angeles, Battleship, Edge of Tomorrow, Skyline, Independence Day, and The Tomorrow War. Fun in parts, but it ends up feeling familiar rather than surprising.
