Past Lives in corsets. It is the kind of film that trusts tiny gestures and quiet moments to carry emotions rather than relying on dramatic dialogue. It captures a particular kind of longing with so much elegance. ⚠️ Spoilers ahead. From here on, plot details are discussed. Read on if you’ve seen the film. If not, save this post and come back after. ⚠️ The film is confident in silence, where small glances and mannerisms carry their own meaning. It is a very well made prestige film, like Phantom Thread (2017) and Hamnet (2025). I appreciate the story, production design, costumes, and cinematography. The sound design is brilliant too. The waves feel calm throughout the first and second acts. But as their time together starts running out, the sea becomes more violent as their inevitable separation draws near. Everything feels carefully composed and elegant. I just do not personally connect with it enough to call it a masterpiece. It also gives me major TOTGA vibes like Past Lives (2023), La La Land (2016), Lost in Translation (2003), and The Bridges of Madison Countyn(1995), where there is this longing for a love that is destined not to last. What remains is the memory and the longing for what could have been. “Not everything is fleeting. Some feelings are deep.” And true enough, I love the symbolism near the end when the painting shows Héloïse bookmarking a page in a book that we already know contains Marianne’s portrait. Héloïse may have moved on with her life, but Marianne is still buried deeply in her heart. Poetic film. I Ain’t Reading Allat (Spoilers): A beautifully crafted and poetic film about a love that cannot last but never completely disappears. I admire almost everything about how it is made, especially its quiet storytelling, visuals, and sound design, but emotionally, it kept just enough distance from me that I cannot personally call it a masterpiece.
