Just Mercy 2019

Reminds me of The Green Mile (1999) with the trope of trying to bring justice to someone wrongly lined up for death row. Walter is an innocent man trapped inside a justice system that has already decided what it wants to believe. There is also that theme of fighting a system that chooses what is easy instead of what is right, where one person keeps pushing against an institution that would rather protect itself than admit it made a mistake. It also has elements of defending the Black community against prejudice, which reminded me of To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). Then there is the courtroom drama side where Bryan keeps finding cracks in the evidence, testimony, and legal process to save his client. Clean direction and storytelling by Destin Daniel Cretton. Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx, Rob Morgan, and Tim Blake Nelson all gave great performances.
