Before Midnight (2013) review

I think this is more about what happens when you marry your childhood sweetheart, and all the "what ifs" are now "what is". Their world is no longer just about the two of them. It extends to families and friends. That is why the film's treatment feels different, especially when they are not walking together in the same frame. There is a sense of separation even when they are technically still together. Even if you spent years and years with a person, you still do not know 100% of that person. There are always layers that remain hidden or unresolved. Celine still carries that desire to explore and be free. She feels even more outspoken here, leaning into her identity and independence. That contrast between freedom and commitment becomes more visible. This film feels brutally honest about marriage. The unsaid feelings, both big and small, slowly pile up. The amount of sacrifice, expectations, and responsibilities. Couples start keeping score, who gives more, who gives less. And I can relate to that. I am guilty of thinking that way too. The ending feels funny yet real at the same time. It shows that love is not just a feeling but a constant decision. It is about choosing each other every second, every opportunity, staying, and putting band aid solution after band aid solution that can be ripped apart every time, but still you have the choice to patch it up again and again and again, for as long as you are willing to stay married.
