There’s that same nocturnal loneliness and danger. The lenses used are also nice. Michael Mann and DP Donald Thorin mostly used longer focal length lenses and anamorphic glass, which compress the foreground and background while exaggerating light sources. That’s why the neon lights bloom and smear slightly, making the city feel overwhelming and alive at the same time. James Caan delivered a very strong performance as Frank. He has that quiet authority and confidence, giving off George Clooney vibes. Calm, professional, but you can feel the volatility underneath. The score adds a constant thrill and energy to the film. Tangerine Dream’s electronic music feels mechanical and relentless, perfectly matching Frank’s life as a precision driven thief. Yung sparks ng parang welding na pambutas sa safe create a high-intensity practical sparks effect, producing a white-hot backlight that throws Frank into hard silhouette. Kasabay nun yung fog from the fire extinguisher, which is essentially practical smoke. This adds texture to the light, making the beams visible and giving the scene depth. Ang ganda ng combined effect. Even without dialogue or musical score, ramdam mo yung intensity ng pagbubukas ng safe purely through sound design. Every scrape, spark, and metal grind feels heavy and real. Ang ganda nung pinasabog niya yung bahay niya. It really feels like they blew up the set and captured everything in camera. Sobrang tangible and ramdam yung explosion. Same with the cocktail lounge. Ang ganda rin ng explosion doon, plus the use of slow motion makes it even more visceral. You can feel the heat and chaos, not just see it. The ending is violent and decisive. Revenge is fully satisfied. Frank doesn’t look back. I think dahil dito nag double down si Michael Mann sa thought ng Heat, o yung police force breathing on the thief’s neck. Nandun yung suspense and anticipation ng inevitable death. May mga pros talaga na would rather do it on their own, lone wolf. Tinrap siya in a grasp, guised as a favor, in an attempt to control him.
