Wow! Audrey Hepburn is so gorgeous! Love at first sight agad. Her drunk and carefree state is so charming. Instant crush! Gregory Peck feels more enigmatic here compared to his fatherly role in To Kill a Mockingbird. He carries this quiet confidence, but at the same time his moments of panic are actually really funny. The film is such a feel good story about a guy who initially takes advantage of a woman for profit, both of them living a lie to achieve their own goals, but eventually developing something real. Their dynamic is what makes the film so engaging. And having Rome as the backdrop just elevates everything. Rome looks incredibly beautiful in black and white. It feels more timeless and elegant. The texture of the image combined with the musical score gives the film a sense of grandeur. The acting is great, especially in the quiet longing moments. I can really see what they feel just through their eyes. Those small pauses and glances carry so much heavy emotion. I am really glad I watched this. It is simple, charming, and quietly heartbreaking.
